Big Guns
If not the biggest as in 16" or 18" naval canon, at least big enough. Below are a couple of emplacements from Fort Pickens on the Florida coast. The top picture is a WWII vintage shield gun; only four of these are still in existence. This example would fire a 105 pound shell 27,000 yards (15 miles). More info on the gun here http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3369/...929c20a4_b.jpg
The gun below dates from WW I and is called a "disappearing" gun. The reason for the name is obvious. Below that, if ya just gotta see the really big guns. These from the USS North Carolina. If you come to the area, Ft Pickens is a good visit. It was coastal defense and was in operation from before the Civil War until after WWII. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3369/...929c20a4_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3297/...ca63b5f5_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3380/...d6d2a9ba_b.jpg |

Very cool stuff. We have an Iowa class (The New Jersey) that has the same 16 inchers.
BTW, your link is to the image. |

I'm thinking a box of 50 would weigh around 150,000 pounds and be a little pricey. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2482/...c9d45e19_b.jpg |

Re: Big Guns
Actually we need to get Maddie in here, she correctly identified a field piece we were all making assumptions on.
I've gotta of course submit Gustav and Dora. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2301/...e42612.jpg?v=0 |
